Koirala arrives in Delhi, PM receives him

New Delhi : Undertaking his first visit abroad after becoming the Prime Minister of Nepal, G P Koirala arrived here today on a four-day visit during which India is expected to announce economic assistance for reconstruction of the Himalayan country.

Attaching special significance to the visit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh set aside protocol and went to Indira Gandhi International Airport here to receive Koirala.

Singh and Koirala will hold talks tomorrow on the entire gamut of bilateral relations in the backdrop of the recent landmark changes in Nepal like restoration of democracy and clipping of powers of King Gyanendra.

The Nepalese Prime Minister will call on President A P J Abdul Kalam and meet Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

New Delhi hopes to give visas on arrival to tourists

New Delhi: Desperate to sell India as a 365-day destination, the government is thinking of issuing visas on arrival to tourists from around the world. Tourism Minister Ambika Soni said yesterday that India had targeted an annual 25 per cent growth to facilitate over 10 million arrivals by 2012. India currently receives around 3.5 million overseas visitors. Some of the alternatives like visa on arrival, long-term visa, multiple entry visas are being examined with the ministries of home and external affairs, given Indias concerns on security issues, Soni said here.

Spanish PM Zapatero arrives in New Delhi

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a four-day visit during which the two countries will sign Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty on criminal matters and two other pacts. The visit is the first at the Head of the Government level from either side in 13 years and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
