Now a brand new bond between Delhi and Lahore

NEW DELHI: It might be one of the most debatable subjects between India and Pakistan, but Delhi Universitys Ramjas College has decided to go beyond just talking about history. Opening up a whole new chapter in cross-border dialogue, it has now become the first college in the University to have signed a full-fledged memorandum of understanding with one of Pakistans premier educational institutions, the Lahore University of Management Sciences, better known by its acronym LUMS.

A step further than the usual short-term exchanges that have taken place so far between colleges across the border, this new MoU envisages a far-reaching exchange programme for students and faculty for a sustained period. Looking at history in a completely different way, the two countries might view the circumstances of 1947 in opposite ways, but for once there will be a chance to air these views academically.

These negotiations have been taking place for the past two years. With this first-of-its-kind agreement now we will mutually decide the number of students and staff that we want to exchange. We have agreed to do this exchange for history, political science, commerce and economics. It will also be applicable to research, says the Ramjas College Principal, Rajendra Prasad.

Red Fort

Red Fort: The Red Fort, with a circumference of over 2.2 kilometers, was laid out by the banks of the Yamuna River in the 17th century. The Mughal emperor Shajahan built it with the ambition of concentrating the Mughal power in one monument. Monument is perhaps not the right word. A mini-city is more like it. Unfortunately for the emperor, before he could move his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad in Delhi, he was taken a political prisoner by his son Aurangazeb. The fort is a delight to one's imagination. Imagine the Naqqar Khana (Drum room) also called Naubat Khana

Shalimar Garden

Shalimar Garden: It is one of the most important Mughal gardens in the city. The Shalimar Garden, which lies in the suburbs of the city, was once the first-night staging post for the Mughals on their way to Kashmir and Lahore. In 1658, Aurangzeb was crowned emperor here.

The judge directed Mahajan to furnish a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and a surety of the same amount, and
