NEW Delhi is one big sensory overload filled with cultural pleasures and contrasts.
1. Touchdown
As soon as you arrive in New Delhi – described by Lonely Planet as the crowded, colourful and unruly heart of India – the first thing you notice is the smell. While not overpowering, it does take some getting used to.
The sight of shanty towns surrounding the airport is also a sign of how the city struggles with poverty. Be prepared for some of the worlds tightest security.
The airport is to the south of the city and make sure you have a taxi booked before you leave the terminal. As you walk out you will feel – quite literally – like a Hollywood superstar. Taxi drivers crowd the entrance and shout at you to get your attention. Your driver should be already there but if not, dont stress. Pick a driver, agree on a price, and do not pay until you arrive at your hotel. Cab trips vary in price but you should expect to pay between 100 to 200 rupees ($3 to $6).
