Baisakhi

Baisakhi: The Baisakhi Festival marks the birth of the Khalsa Panth and the beginning of a new way of life.

Holi

Holi: This festival of color is celebrated in March to mark the beginning of spring, Men and women of all age sprinkle colored waters on each other. This is accompanied by singing and dancing. These colors and other mixtures can permanently stain clothing Hence it is advisable not to go out in your Sunday best.

Garden Tourism Festival

Garden Tourism Festival: It is organized by the Delhi Tourism at the end of February the festival lasts for over three days and generates much interest amongst the gardening fraternity. Delhi is flooded with flowers at this time. It is also a useful meeting ground for gardening enthusiasts, as well as fun and frolic for people of all ages.

Republic Day

Republic Day: It is celebrated on the 26th of January when India became a Republic. The constitution of Independent India came into being on 26th of January 1950. A must visit event for every tourist. A military parade on the Rajpath typifies this state celebration of India’s republic hood, followed on Jan 29 by the “Beating the Retreat” ceremony outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Delhi Book Fair: The Delhi Book fair is the largest fair in the country, in terms of size as well as on the economic side. It has a great contribution in supporting the growth of the neighboring markets. There are over 12000 publishers and 90, 000 titles every year in more than about 18 languages. This book fair in Delhi is visited by national and international publishers, distributors, librarians, researchers as well as people like academicians, teachers and students, writers and book lovers. Thousands of books are sold in the 9 days of the fair and there are foreign delegates and teams who come to participate in the fair. The Delhi book fair takes place at the sprawling Pragati Maidan. There are both new titles as well as the old favorites sold here. The Delhi Book fair also aims to diver the attention of the younger generation to focus more on reading books than reading from the internet. There are more than 200 leading publishers and booksellers who participate in the Delhi Book fair from near and far. There is also a good amount of foreign participation with publishers and distributors who come from places like US, China, Iran, Pakistan and Mauritius.

The Delhi Book Fair in Delhi is held in the early days of February.

The Delhi Flower Show: One of the major national festivals, Republic day is celebrated on 26th January and is a day of great importance and significance. Phulwalon-Ki-Sair

Phulwalon-Ki-Sair - The Indian Classical singing is mainly divided in two forms- The Southern Carnatic and the Northern music with various raags. The masters of these forms are always giving performances in Delhi.

The Festival of Phool Walon ki Sair in Delhi was started in the 19th Century by the Mughal Emperor Akbar Shah II. The festival, however, became popular during the reign of Bahadur Shah Zafar. Shah Zafar was chosen to be the next emperor by the British. But Queen Mumtaz Mahal wanted to make her son Mirza Jehangir to sit on the throne. But later on, Mirza was sent in deported to Allahabad. His mother Mumtaz then took an oath that she would make a contribution of a four-poster flower bed at the sacred shrine of Khwaja Bakhtiyar Kaki at Mehrauli if her son was permitted to return. When Mirza was at last allowed to return, and rightfully given the throne, according to the promise, a beautiful flower canopy was created to which the flower sellers added an intricate flower pankha at their own cost. This was carried in a procession to the saint’s tomb.
The Phool Walon ki Sair Festival in Delhi is a festival of joviality and merriment. The festival is celebrated every year in the months of September-October.

Surajkund Crafts Mela

Surajkund Crafts Mela: Surajkund Crafts Mela is one of the largest crafts fair in India that is held every year in the Surajkund district of Haryana. The fair is truly the most popular among all fairs and festivals in Haryana and attracts visitors in large numbers from all parts of the country. Even several tourists from the world over arrive at the Surajkund Crafts Mela every year to witness the glorious culture and heritage of India.
Surajkund is a small ancient kund (pond) in Haryana on the outskirts of Delhi. This picturesque place is the venue for the annual Handicrafts fair. The business fair held by the Delhi Government is also a major attraction for the Business community. The Diwali fairs around the Diwali festival is held in almost every community.

The International Trade Fair

The International Trade Fair: Trade and Handicraft fairs are a common phenomenon in Delhi. Some of the major events held here include the annual 13-day long International Trade Fair that begins on 14th November. This trade fair is held at the Pragati Maidan. This fair is a major event for the Business community. Corporate houses from all over the world come in this fair and business deal are finalised in a big way. This fair is also a major tourist attraction and lakhs of people visit the fair which ends after thirteen days.

Fairs and Festivals in Delhi

Delhi is one of the greenest capitals in the world, with a long tradition of laying out of gardens, which dot the city. Surajkund

Surajkund: The premises of the Surajkund have a perennial lake surrounded by rock-cut steps. The place is popular for a big fair, which takes place in the first two weeks of February. Surajkund is situated at a distance of about 11kms from the Qutab Minar on the Mehrauli-Badarpur road.

Badhkal Lake

Badhkal Lake: This Lake is situated at a distance of about 32kms from Delhi, in the district of Faridabad. It is a popular picnic spot and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and overwhelming serenity.

Tilyar Lake

Tilyar Lake: It is a popular picnic spot located at 70 kms from Delhi. Tourists can enjoy activities like boating and horse riding. Children’s Park and a mini-zoo are also attached to the place.

Sultanpur

Sultanpur: This bird sanctuary is situated at a distance of 46 kms from Delhi. Here you can see a variety of domestic and migratory birds. The Shallow Lake near the sanctuary becomes a great attraction for the tourists.

Mud Fort

Mud Fort: At a distance of 80 kms from Delhi, this fort is situated in the lush green surrounding of U.P. The banks of Brijghat, 24 kms away on the holy Ganges, make an interesting picnic outing among fields of sugarcane and mango orchards.

Kesroli

Kesroli: It is located in the heart of the ‘Golden Triangle’ and makes an ideal base to visit the neighboring palaces, museums and sanctuaries of Alwar and Sariska.

Neemrana

Neemrana: It is one of the oldest heritage resorts of India. This fort-palace is situated on a majestic plateau of the Aravalli ranges and was built in 1464 A.D. by Prithviraj Chauhan lll.

Mussoorie

Mussoorie: Mussoorie the famed ‘Queen of the Hills’, Mussoorie is one of the most famous hill stations of India. With over 350 hotels, Mussoorie has the largest number of hotels among the hill stations in India. Mussoorie had its birth when Captain Young laid its foundations in 1823. It was initially called ‘The Mullingar’, but it was later named after the widely grown in the hill station, dal called ‘Masur’. Mussoorie has several places to visit such as the Gun Hill, Muncipal Lodge, Childers Lodge, Camel’s Back Road and Cloud’s End. Gun Hill has a very interesting story behind it.

Before Independence, everyday, a gun mounted on this hill, used to fire at noon. And people on hearing it would adjust their watches! Children’s Lodge is the highest peak, about five kilometers from the city. Garden enthusiasts can visit the Municipal Garden.
